Diabetic unable to take oral fluids due to ALOC and low BS
Dextrose: Contraindications
Diabetic coma with BS is excessive, intracranial or intraspinal hemorrhage (sugar H2O is high solute concentration)

Extravastion= surrounding tissue necrosis, reactive hypoglycemia (after infusion)

50mL prefilled syringe of D50W
Dextrose: Adult Dose
25g D50W IV—may repeat as appropriate.
Dextrose: Pedi Dose
Pedi dose: Give D25W, slow IVP/IOP, 0.5g/kg up to 25g to pts 4y
Dextrose: Precautions
Avoid infiltration of IV during infusion, may cause tissue sloughing, necrosis, and phlebitis
