Bind to opiate receptors in the CNS, altering response to and perception of pain. Produces CNS depression
Fentanyl: Indications
Pain management. Alternate to NTG in pts who are + for PED-5 administration or w/o relief after 3 NTG
Fentanyl: Contraindications
Hypersensitivity
Fentanyl: S.E.
Confusion, blurred vision, apnea, laryngospasm, allergic reaction, respiratory depression, arrhythmias, hypotension, N/V, skeletal, and thoracic muscle rigidity
Fentanyl: Supplied
Ampules and vials 100mcg in 2mL
Fentanyl: Adult Dose
1mcg/kg IV, IM, IO slow push (1-2m). Can consider repeating once after 5m, for a total of 2mcg/kg if pain has not been managed. Burns can be repeated x2, for a total of 3mcg/kg
Fentanyl: Ped Dose
1mcg/kg IM, IV, IO slow push. Same max dose as Adult
Fentanyl: Precautions
Chest wall rigidity possible with a high dose rapid push.
