Overcomes effects of narcotic OD including respiratory depression, sedation, and hypotension. Onset is within 2 minutes. Duration is dependent on dose and route
Naloxone: Indications
Indicated for complete or partial reversal of known or suspected narcotic-induced respiratory depression and overdose. Antidote for natural and synthetic narcotics.
Naloxone: Contraindications
Hypersensitivity
Naloxone: S. E.
May see VF, tachycardia, HTN, N/V, and diaphoresis, in higher doses. Tremors and withdrawal symptoms in narcotic-dependent patients.
Naloxone: Adult dose
If suspected narcotic OD consider up to 2 mg Narcan IV/IM/IN. Case specific consider up to 10 mg. Repeat as necessary
Naloxone: Pedi dose
0.1mg/kg IV/IO/IM to max dose of 2mg at a time, repeat as necessary
Naloxone: Precautions
May precipitate acute withdrawal symptoms in narcotic addicts. Effects of drug may not outlast effects of narcotics. Use with caution in patients with cardiac disease or those receiving cardiotoxic drugs. It is ineffective against respiratory depression caused by barbiturates, anesthetics, other nonnarcotic agents, or pathologic conditions.
