Morphine: action
An opium-derivative, narcotic analgesic, which is a CNS depressant. Inhibits perception of pain by binding to opiate receptors
Morphine: indications
Analgesic of choice in pain associated with MI unresponsive to nitrates and acute injuries of extremities
Morphine: contraindications
Hypersensitivity, hypotension, DLOC, upper airway obstruction, convulsive states, Head injuries, acute bronchial asthma
Morphine: S. E.
CNS depression, hypotension, bradycardia, cardiac arrest, or tachycardia and HTN. N/V, respiratory depression and arrest
Morphine: Adult dose
2-10mg IV/IO/IM titrated to obtain pain relief. Give in 2 mg increments q m
Morphine: precautions
Administer slowly and titrate to effect. May cause apnea in asthmatic pts. Cautiously used in elderly, head injuries with ICP, COPD, severe hepatic or renal disease
