Personal Protective Equipment 2017 Flashcards
What does SCBA consist of?
Self Contained Breathing Apparatus
face piece connected to hose and regulator to air source (compressed air/oxygen or oxygen-generating chemical)
When is SCBA recommended?
in atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH)
What is the avg usage time of SCBA?
30 mins
limited to air supply/usage
What is a SAR?
Supply Air Respirators
supply air, never oxygen
not for use in IDLH environments
Describe air-purifying respirators
Consist of face piece and air-purifying device
remove airborne contaminants
not for IDLH, oxygen deficient, unventilated, confined, and unidentified contaminant atmospheres
What are the different types of air-purifying respirators?
particulate filters, cartridges, canisters which contain sorbents for gas, vapors, or a combination of both
Describe Level A PPE
offers highest level of protection for both respiratory and dermal
used when handling extremely hazardous chemicals, in unventilated areas, or working with unknown substances
ex SCBA with “Space Suit”
Describe Level B PPE
Offers highest level of protection for both respiratory and dermal
used when working in unventilated area or low O2 environment with little to no splash hazards
ex: pressure demand SCBAs
Describe Level C PPE
Lower level of respiratory and dermal protection
used when working in known airborne contaminants
offers no chemical or splash hazards
ex: air purifying respirators with chemical resistant clothing - asbestos
Describe Level D PPE
offers little to no respiratory or low dermal protection
used when working in known low level contaminants
offers no chemical or splash hazards
ex: chemical resistant clothing, glasses, respirator, hard hat
