Institutions and Housing - Saraniecki Flashcards
What is the APHA Appraisal Method and what is the scale?
method of numerical rating by penalty scoring of the quality of housing in a define area
evaluations based on physical facilities, quality of maintenance, and density of occupancy
Zero is the unattainable perfect score
Theoretical max is 600
Practical max is 300
Median score is 75
What are the quality scores for APHA? (5)
A - Good
B - Acceptable
C - Borderline
D- Substandard
E - unfit for habitation
What is the NEEDS appraisal method?
Neighborhood Environmental Evaluation Decision System by US Public Health
Uses fewer variables than APHA to provide faster analysis
What are the general ventilation requirements?
Temporarily assembled public area?
Prison?
Bathrooms?
Public areas of temporary assembly - 33% outside fresh air, 15-20 cuft/person
correctional facilities - 33% fresh air
toilets/bathrooms - mechanical exhaust should supply 5 exchanges/hr, fans NOT activated by light switch
min 2 ft chimney clearance from roof peak
How do you calculate air exchange?
intake/room volume = air changes
air change volume/people = air change/person
What is a nosocomial infection?
infections patients acquire while admitted to a health-care facility and generally develop 48 hours or later after admission
What is a sanitation risk found in nursing homes?
~5% of hospital patients incur nosocomial infections
large teaching hopitals have the highest rate
most common infection - urinary tract
How is nosocomial infection prevented in nursing homes?
handwashing
air handling and HVAC
equipment sterilization
food and water sanitation
laundering and linen handling
housekeeping
infection control committee
What other requirements are there for nursing homes?
beds 4 ft apart and one foot from wall
ventilation:
positive air pressure in non-infectious people’s rooms
negative air pressure in infectious people’s rooms
HEPA filtered positive air pressure in immunocompromised partient’s rooms
Exhausts with HEPA filter air from dirty laundry areas and isolation rooms
What are the institutional laundry procedures?
correct chlorine dilution in wash water
drying temp of 170F
wash water temps of 160-167F for 25 mins
clean linen room - positive air pressure
dirty linen room - negative air pressure
single combined room - positive pressure from clean to dirty
separate bathrooms for clean and dirty rooms
What are the general standards for outdoor play areas of a daycare?
Directly adjoining or 1/8th a mile
75 sqft/child >2yo using the playground at one time
33 sqft/infant
50 sqft/child 18-24 months
based on 33% licensed occupancy
fencing 4 ft high, bottom fence gap no bigger than 3.5 in
Rooftop fence >6ft with direct rooftop fire escape
exit min 36 in
What is playground soil analyzed for and why?
lead (Pb)
initially and every 2 years if Pb paint on exterior
not to exceed 500 ppm
toddler blood action level is 5 micrograms/dL
What are electrical standards for playgrounds?
safety covers on outlets
GFCI on outlets within reach of water source, tested every 3 months
What are approved playground surfaces? (7)
any material tested to ASTM F1292:
unitary surfaces
engineered wood fiber
pea gravel
sand
shredded/recycled rubber mulch
wood mulch not chromated copper arsenate treated
wood chips
What are unapproved playground materials? (4)
asphalt
carpet not tested to ASTM F1292
dirt
grass
When should water testing occur at day cares?
every 3 years regardless of source
bacterial and chemical
What are acceptable temperature ranges for day cares ?
winter - 65-75F, 30-70% humidity
summer - 68-82F, 30-70% humidity
What kind of sleeping arrangements are permitted at daycares?
infant walkers PROHIBITED, kids were getting hurt
pads and sleeping bags on floor ok as long as 65F or warmer
cribs, cots, sleeping bags, mats, pads at least 3’ apart unless there is a screen, but staff must be able to see kids
no bunk beds for kinds under 6 years old
