Housing and Noise 2017 Flashcards
What are the elements of a housing inspection?
habitat must meet adequate psychological and physiological needs as well as protect against diseases and accidents
ceiling must be at least 7’6 inches
kitchen and bathroom must be 7’
avoid overcrowding
Define sociocusis
becoming deaf from noise as you get older
What is pressbycusis?
age deafness - old age
What is noise measured in?
frequency of sounds expressed as Hertz
What is the frequency range of audible sounds?
20-20,000 Hz
What is a period in regards to sound wave?
time of one cycle (wavelength)
What is frequency defined as in terms of sound waves?
number of cycles/second
What does doubling of sound pressure result in?
x3?
x4?
x8?
sound does not have additive effect
doubling = +3 dB
so 100 dB + 100 dB = 103 dB
triple = +4.8
x4 = +6 dB
x8 = +9 dB
How does a sound level meter work?
measures sound pressure in decibels of the actual sound level emitted from a source
ultimately measures loudness
frequency does not play a role
How does an octave level/waveband analyzer work?
used in measurement of hearing - audiometric test
sound pressure is not important
device emits diffrerency frequency sound waves and tests hearing acuity
What are noise dosimeters?
used to measure occupational noise during work day to meet noise exposure laws
What are the Federal noise standard limits
