Usage
A single, completed action in the past, with the emphasis on the result or consequences of the action.
Example: Hier, Michel a rangé son bureau.
Ou… : Il a décidé de ranger son bureau chaque semaine.
Result: Office is clean/he has decided to clean
Construction (general)
Use the present-tense forms of avoir/être and the past participle (participe passé).
Construction - negative
In negative sentences, the two parts of the negation (ne… pas) sandwich the auxiliary verb (être ou avoir).
Example:
J’ai rigolé. → Je N’ai PAS rigolé.
Construction - reflexive verbs
For reflexive verbs, the two parts of the negation sandwich the auxiliary verb (être ou avoir) and reflexive pronoun (me, te, se).
Example : Je NE me suis PAS trompé dans mon calcul
Past participle:
a) regular -er verbs
b) regular -ir verbs
c) regular -re verbs
a) If the infinitive ends in er, the participle ends in é
Example:
aimer – aimé
b) If the infinitive ends in ir, the participle ends in i
Example:
finir – fini
c) If the infinitive ends in re, the participle ends in u
Example:
vendre – vendu
