Depuis vs. pendant
- Usage and tenses
a) Depuis is used to describe something that started in the past and is still happening. In French, it is used with the PRESENT tense of the verb.
Present tense verb + depuis + length of time
b) Pendant is used with past and future actions, to describe how long something lasted for or will last for.
Past/future tense verb + pendant + length of time)
Translate:
I’ve lived in Sheffield for six years.
J’habite à Sheffield depuis six ans.
Translate:
I am going to Tours in France this summer for four weeks.
Je vais à Tours en France cet été pendant quatre semaines.
Translate:
We’re going to my grandparents’ house.
Nous allons chez mes grands-parents.
Translate:
He bought fish at the fishmonger’s.
Il a acheté du poisson chez le poissonnier.
Use of the preposition ‘en’:
a) Countries
b) Transport
c) Months and seasons - exception?
d) Materials
e) Gerondif
a) to’ or ‘in’ a feminine country (most of them)
b) ‘by’ a form of transport
c) ‘in’ a month or season (exception: ‘au’ printemps)
d) what material something is made ‘of’
e) with the present participle (ending in –ant) to express ‘while doing’ or ‘upon doing’ something
