Hue
Color at its purest intensity
Line
Element of art defined by a mark with greater length than width
Complimentary color
Any two colors which are directly opposite each other, such as red and green and red-purple and yellow-green
Contour line
Continuous line drawn without lifting the drawing tool or looking at the paper
Acrylic
A type of paint made with synthetic resin as the medium liquid to bind the pigment color
Form
Element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume
Pigment
Any substance used as a coloring agent
- Earth, mineral, chemicals
Watercolor
Paint composed of water-soluble pigment
Value
Element of art that pertains to the lightness and darkness of tones of color
Gum arabic
Binder to hold the pigment in suspension and fix pigment to painting surface
Mop brush
Round version of the wash brush used for laying in large areas of water or color
Shape
Element of art that is two-dimensional, flat, and has limited height and width
Primary color
Blue, red, yellow
Space
Element of art by which positive and negative spaces areas are defined or a sense of depth achieved
Pattern
Underlying structure that organizes surfaces or structures in a consistent, regular manner
Composition
Organization or arrangement of a work of art
Variety
A principle of art concerned with combining one or more elements of art in different ways to create interest
Proportion
Describes the size, location or amount of one element to another in a work
Glazing
A thin, transparent layer of paint, particularly in oil painting and acrylics
Tint
Light value of a color, made by mixing the color with white
Shade
When black is added to a color to make it darker
Charcoal
A drawing pencil or crayon made from this material

Texture: Surface quality that can be seen and felt; can be smooth or rough
