Acts as a competitive antagonist at opiate receptors in the central nervous system
Reverses the effects of narcotics and synthetic analgesic:
-Central nervous system
-Respiratory depression
-Respiratory arrest
Indications for naloxone
Narcotics:
- morphine (MSContin)
- heroin
- oxycodone (OxyContin)
- methadone
- codeine
- meperidine (Demerol)
- fentanyl (Sublimaze)
- hydrocondone (Vicodin)
- hydromorphone
Unconsciousness of unknown etiology
Contraindications for naloxone
None in the emergency setting
Adverse reactions for naloxone
Withdrawal symptoms:
- Confusion
- Hypotension
- Tachycardia
- Hypertension
- Dysrhythmias
- Diaphoresis
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Routes of administration for naloxone
IV IO IM ET Intra-nasal (IN)
Onset/Peak/Duration for naloxone (IV/IO)
O: < 2 minutes
P: < 2 minutes
D: 20 minutes - 2 hours
Adult dosages for naloxone (IV/IO)
2 mg
May repeat the dose every 2 minutes
Pediatric dosages for naloxone (IV/IO)
0.1 mg/kg (up to 2 mg per dose)
May repeat the dose every 2 minutes
Onset/Peak/Duration for naloxone (IM/IN)
O: 2-10 minutes
P: 2-10 minutes
D: 20 minutes - 2 hours

1 mg sprayed in each nostril with a mucosal atomizer device (MAD)
May repeat the dose every 2 minutes
