epinephrine Flashcards
Trade names for epinephrine
Adrenalin
Classes for epinephrine
Sympathomimetic
MOA of epinephrine
Vasoconstricion Increases HR Increases myocardial contractility Bronchodilation Block histamine receptors
Indications for epinephrine
Cardiac arrest - Asystole - Pulseless electrical activity - Ventricular fibrillation - Pulsless ventricular tachycardia Asthma Bronchospasm associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema Allergic reaction Anaphylaxis Bradycardia Hypotension (from a cause other than hypovolemia)
Contraindications for epinephrine
None in the emergency setting
Adverse reactions to epinephrine
Extravasation of the IV/IO may cause tissue necrosis Tachycardia Increased myocardial oxygen demand Hypertension Dysrhythmias Palpitations Chest pain Dyspnea Tremors Nervousness Anxiety Dizziness Headache Nausea / vomiting
Routes of administration for epinephrine
IV IO IM ET Infusion
Onset/Peak/Duration for epinephrine (IV/IO/ET)
O: < 2 minutes
P: < 5 minutes
D: 5-10 minutes
Adult dosages for epinephrine (cardiac arrest)
IV/IO: 1 mg (1:10,000)
May repeat the dose every 3-5 minutes
Pediatric dosages for epinephrine (cardiac arrest)
- 01 mg/kg (1:10,000) IV/IO
- May repeat the dose every 3-5 minutes
Special considerations for epinephrine
Can increase adverse reactions when administered with another sympathomimetic
An infusion pump should be used when possible
