Seizures caused by toxicity of pregnancy Pregnancy induced hypertension Pre-term labor Torsades de Pointes V-fib and pulseless V-tach refractory to amiodarone or lidocaine Reactive airway conditions
Contraindications for magnesium sulfate
Hemodynamically significant heart block
Adverse reactions to magnesium sulfate
CNS depression Drowsiness Hypotension Respiratory depression Dysrhythmias
Routes of administration for magnesium sulfate
IV
IO
Infusion
Onset/Peak/Duration magnesium sulfate
O: Immediate
P: Variable
D: 1 hour
Adult dosages for magnesium sulfate (torsades de pointes)
1-2 Gm in 50-100 mL over 5 minutes
May repeat the dose (1-2 Gm) over 1 hour
Pediatric dosages for magnesium sulfate
Reactive airway conditions infusion: 25-50 mg/kg 10% solution infused over 15-30 minutes
Max dose: 2 Gm
Special considerations for magnesium sulfate
An infusion pump should be used to administer the drug when possible
Standard supply for magnesium sulfate
Vial
Adult dosages for magnesium sulfate (pre-term labor/pre-eclampsia/eclampsia)
3-6 Gm in 100 mL over 10-20 minutes
May repeat initial dose
Adult dosages for magnesium sulfate (maintenance infusion)
1-4 Gm/hr
Adult dosages for magnesium sulfate (cardiac arrest)
1-2 Gm over 1-2 minutes
