Muscles of the Hip and Thigh Flashcards

1
Q

Each compartment in the leg is separated by intermuscular ____.

the ___ and ___ intermuscular septum (adjacent to shaft of tibia) is most affected by compartment syndrome

compartments 1 (___) and 2 (__) in this diagram are innervated by the ___/fibular nerve, and the compartments laveled 3 and 4 (___ and ___ ___ compartments) are innervated by the __ nerve.

A

muscles of a same “compartment” have similar structural and vascular compoenets.

Each compartment in the leg is separated by intermuscular septum.

the anterior and posterior intermuscular septum (adjacent to shaft of tibia) is most affected by compartment syndrome

compartments 1 (anterior) and 2 (lateral) in this diagram are innervated by the peroneal/fibular nerve, and the compartments laveled 3 and 4 (superficial and deep posterior compartments) are innervated by the tibular nerve.

Q

the iliacus muscle is attached to the ___ of the ileum. the psoas is attached to the ___ vertebra.

the tensor fascia lata attaches to the ___ ____ ____ and helps to stabilize pelvis during stance

A

fossa of the ileum. the tendons join while they pass out of the pelvis where tehy attach together at the lesser trocanter.

the psoas is attached to the lumbar vertebra

the tensor fascia lata attaches to the Ilio-tibial tract (IT BAND) and helps to stabilize the pelvis during stance.

Q

the glute max is the largest posterior hip muscle and originates at the __ and __. Fibers attach to posterior aspect of th efemur below the __ trochanter. it connects to the _ _, which runs down the lateral aspect of the thigh to attach to the lateral _ of the _

A

the glute max is the largest posterior hip muscle and originates at the sacrum and pelvis. Fibers attach to posterior aspect of th efemur below the greater trochanter. it connects to the IT band, which runs down the lateral aspect of the thigh to attach to the lateral condyl of the fibula

Q

outline the deep muscles of the posterior compartment adn hip. what is their role?

A

deep muscles: glute minimus, piriformis, gemelli, quadratus femoris. and obturator foramen

  • the deep muscles support the head of the femur in the acetabulum (and help with external rotation of the hip)

Q
A
17
Q

which muscles make up the medial compartment of the thigh

A

gracilis, adductor longus, adductor magnus, adductor brevis, gracilis

18
Q

note: the muscles of the thigh can be broken down into anterior, posterior and medial compartments, whereas muscles of the thigh are usualy just characterized as anteiror or posterior compartments.

A
19
Q

muscles of the anterior thigh

A

sartorius, pectineus, rectus femorus and the 3 vastus muscles (lateralis, medialis and intermedius)

20
Q

note:

sartorius and RF originate from the pelvis (across the hip) so they contribute to the movement of the hip as well. pectineus si part of the anterior thigh compartment in terms of innervation, but it acts as an adductor. all other anterior thigh muscles originate at the femur so they act to extend the knee.(kick out the leg)

A
21
Q

note

A

the posterior hip compartmetn has a lot of deep muscles.

the glute max originates from the sacrum and the pelvis and fibers attach to the posterior aspect of the femur below the greater trocanter, then it connects to the IT tract (runs down lateral aspect of the thigh that attaaches to lateral condyl of tibia)

22
Q

outline the posterior compartment of the gthigh

A

biceps femoris

semitendinosus

semimembranosus

-

23
Q

the adductor magnus contains the ___ __. this gap allows the passage of ___ vessels from anterior to posterior thigh so they can pass throguh leg posteriorly

A

the adductor magnus contains the adductor hiatus. this gap allows the passage of femoral vessels from anterior to posterior thigh so they can pass throguh leg posteriorly

24
Q

the insertion of the __, ___, and ___ is on the medial aspect of the tibia. this spot is called the PES ANSERINUS

A

insertion of the sartorius, gracillus, semitendinosis

25
Q

which muscles function to extend the hip

A

bicep femoris (long head)

adductor magnus (also adducts)

gluteus maximus

26
Q

which muscles abduct the hip joint?

A

gluteus minimus

gluteus medius

tensor fasciae latae

27
Q

which muscles adduct the hip

A

adductors magnus, brevis and longus.

the pectineus and gracilis also adduct

28
Q

which muscles extend the knee

A

quads– vastus medialis, intermedius, lateralis and rectus femoris (which also helps to flex the hip)

29
Q

which muscles flex the knee joint

A

he main flexors of the knee are the so-called hamstring muscles, semi-membranosus, semitendinosus, and biceps femoris (the long head flexes the knee AND helps with hip extension, while the short femoris only flexes the knee).
