Intrinsic Muscles of the Back Flashcards

Q

most muscles of the back involve connecting the limbs to the trunk. these muscles are innervated by the ___ __. They are __ muscles.

Instrinsic back muscles on the other hand are __ muscles are are innervated by the __ __. these muscles act on the __ __.

A

most muscles of the back involve connecting the limbs to the trunk. these muscles are innervated by the anterior ramus. They are hypaxial muscles.

Instrinsic back muscles on the other hand are epaxial muscles are are innervated by the posterior ramus. these muscles act on the vertebral column.

Q

what separates the division between epaxial and hypaxial muscle in the thoracolumbar region?

A

in this section, we can see the deep layer of the thoracolumbar fascia, coming off the transverse process of the vertebrae. this is the division of the posterior epaxial (posterior ramus innervation) and the hypaxial muscle (anterior ramus innervation)

the quadratus lumborum muscle is anterior to this division and is a hypaxial muscle even though it is close to the epaxial muscles.

Q

there are two sets of intrinsic back muscles, a superficial and deep set, each with 3 components

in the superficial/intermediate intrinsic muscle set, there is: ___ __ group, made up of the __, the __, and the __ muscles. they are important extensors of the vertebral column

the deep set of intrinsic back muscles is the __ group, composed of the __ group of short muscles developed in thoracic region, the __ (inferiorly dominate), and the __.(superiorly dominated)

A

there are two sets of intrinsic back muscles, a superficial and deep set, each with 3 components

in the superficial/intermediate intrinsic muscle set, there is: erector spinae group, made up of the iliocostalis, the longissumus, and the spinalis muscles. they are important extensors of the vertebral column

the deep set of intrinsic back muscles is the transversospinalis group, composed of the rotatores group of short muscles developed in thoracic region, the multifidus (inferiorly dominate), and the semispnalis.(superiorly dominated)

the multifidous is a pyramid shaped muscle that supports the lumbar vertebrae and consequently of the trunk on the pelvis. IT band syndrome is aided by multifidous stabilization.
