Microanatomy and Physiology of Bone Flashcards
- Also known as Bone Cells
- Surrounded by intercellular matrix
- Located in small cavities in the bone
Osteocytes
- Also called the Bone forming Cells
- Responsible for the formation of osteiod tissue
- Secrete the enzyme phosphatase necessary for deposition of calcium salt forming true bone
Osteoblast
- also called bone-destroying cells
- bone tissue is responsible to environmental changes
Osteoclast
decrease in size
Atrophy
increase in size
Hypertrophy
a localized area of bone formation
Center of ossification
bone formed in the tissue other than the skeleton
Heteroplastic ossification
2 Types of Bone Ossification:
- Endochondral ossification
- Intramembranous ossification
also called intracartilaginous ossification
Endochondral Ossification
junction between epiphysis and diaphysis
Metaphysis
common in flat bones. additional bone is formed by the layers of periosteum on either side of the bone
Intramembranous Ossification
is the formation of true bone by the deposition of calcium salts in a matrix of osteoid tissue
Ossification
deposition of calcium salts in any tissue
Calcification
a process by which the bone tissues form and replace other tissues such as cartilage
Ossification
