Mental Health and Stress - Lecture #7 Flashcards
Locus Control
A personality trait that you have
External Locus
You let things happen to you (Why bother? There’s nothing I can do)
Internal Locus
You make things happen (I can make things happen)
What do External Locus believe?
Success is lucky; does not set goals, blames external factors, and less likely to be stressed by negative events.
What do Internal Locus believe?
Study hard, self motivated, high self esteem.
Disadvantages of Internal Locus
Always panicking, lack confidence and can’t accept failure.
What did Hans Seige discover about stress?
Everyone looked very pale and weak meaning stress impacted the health of an individual
Stress
Nonspecific response of the body to any demand made upon it.
Depression
When the body gives up
HPA Axis
Stress activates the hypothalamo-pituitary adrenal axis.
How does the HPA Axis work?
Hypothalamus sends CRH when under stress to the pituitary. Pituitary responds by sending ACTH to adrenal glands and the glands respond via pumping cortisol.
When is HPA Axis usually activated?
During stress; when you wake up, and in intensive exercise
When does the HPA axis shut down?
Usually at night to allow for proper rest. Tends to follow circadian rhythm
Negative Feedback of HPA Axis
Cortisol pumped will go to the brain to inhibit the production of CRH
Acute Stress: What happens?
Muscles constrict, blood pressure goes up, increased glucose circulating.
