EBM and CAM - Lecture #6 Flashcards
Proceed-Precede Model?
Comprehensive structure for assessing health needs, and evaluating health promotion programs.
Precede
Understand what’s wrong with the environment before making a change. (Predisposing, Reinforcing, Enabling Constructs in Educational Diagnosis and Evaluation)
Social Assessment (Precede)
Determine social problems
Epidemiological Assessment (Precede)
Identify health determinants of problems; set goals
Ecological Assessment (Precede)
Analyze environmental determinants enabling behaviours.
Proceed
Provides a structure for implementing and evaluating public health program. (Policy, Regulatory, Organizational Constructs in Educational & Environmental Development)
Social Assessment
Determines social problems and needs of a given population
Epidemiological assessment
Identify health determinants of problems and sets goals.
Ecological Assessment
Analyze environmental determinants that enable behaviour
Policy Assessment
Start to implement a change in behaviour; i.e. laws and organizations to stop the spread of…
Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM)
Not westernized medicine; people are desperate to use because western medicine can’t deliver certain needs.

Are there risks for natural health products?
Unregulated; not enough information; not proven and unwanted side effects.
Snake Oil Salesman
Phenomenon where someone rips you off
Evidence Based Medicine
Systematically reviewing and using clinical research findings to aid delivery of optimum care.
Meta-Analyses
Professionals take published studies and checks to see if it works.
Levels of Evidence Based Recommendations?
Level 1: At least one Randomized control trial and Meta-Analysis
Level 2 of EBR
Evidence obtained from control trials but not randomized and no meta-analysis.
Level 3 of EBR
Opinions of respected authorities, based on clinical experience and even studies or reports.
What are the limitations of EBM?
RCT are not always ethical, no account for genetic or environmental differences.
