The stages of of Behaviour Change
Pre-contemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, Maintenance
Pre-contemplation
No intent in making a change
Characteristics of Pre-contemplation
Awareness may be incomplete, May be demoralized, Pros or not changing outweighs cons
Intervention Goals of Pre-contemplation
Increases awareness of the importance, Increase pros for physical activity, help rethink habits
Contemplation
Considering changing
Characteristics of Contemplation
Intent to change in next 6 months, Ambivalent and open to conscious rating.
Intervention of Contemplation
Highlights benefits specific to them, building self-efficacy
Focus of Contemplation
It focuses on one’s ability to make the change
Preparation
Making small changes/ready to change in the near future
Characteristics of Preparation
Modifying behaviour, possibly retrying something they did in the past year; overall doing things to help reach goals.
Intervention Goals of Preparation
Make a plan, set a target date, focus on pros, get helpful resources
Focus of Preparation
The focus behind this is to establish a commitment to achieving that goal
Action
Actively engaging in new behaviour
Characteristics of Action
Behaviour has changed in past 6 months, risk for relapse is high, support is required
Intervention for Action
Support to prevent relapse, teach to deal with potential lapses, promote social support
Focus of Action
Reward oneself (extrinsic); buy yourself a new shirt for the gym for working so hard.
Maintenance
Sticking with behaviour change
Characteristics of Maintenance
Higher confidence, more than 6 months, learned to deal with lapses
Intervention Goals of Maintenance
Prepare them for relapses, refine and add variety to program
Focus of Maintenance
They reward themselves Intrinsically (Feel good about themselves)

- Enjoyment/Pleasure
- Body/Self Image
- Practical Conditions
How Physical Activity affects Health Benefits
Muscle endurance goes up, cardiovascuclar system increases
What are the beliefs of health benefits shaped by?
Personal experiences, observing others, and what we see from media
Enjoyment/Pleasure (How does it impact Participation)?
It motivates one and makes them feel good, and this has a likelihood of being maintained
How does Enjoyment/Pleasure of sports make us feel good?
It psychologically/physically makes us feel good and individuals get a sense of achievement even if it’s competitive
Social Involvement
People feel enjoyment when they pursuits things like these with others.
Social Support
The interest and encouragement of family and friends is crucial
Body and Self Image as an affect of participating in PA?
Body and self image may spark a desire for a change.
Negatives behind Body and Self Image as a goal
Shows unobtainable body and you feel less motivated as you can’t reach certain look
Practical Considerations playing a role in participating
Environmental, Facilities, Equipment, Time and Money can all have an effect on whether someone can workout or not. Must weigh the pros and cons to see accessibility and check for limiting factors
