Lab 3 Flashcards
What does Health Canada and CFIA have a role in with nutrition facts?
They had control over what information must appear on a food package
What foods do not require a food label?
Fresh fruits/vegetables, raw seafood, meat, prepared foods behind deli counter.
What are the three components of regulated nutrition labelling?
Nutrition Facts Table, Ingredients List, and Nutrition Claims.
Where are NFT’s found?
Back of a food package
What do NFT’s provide you?
Information on the ingredients of the food, calories, serving size, and %DV.
What changed from the old NFT’s
- They made calories stand out more.
- Put a %DV for total sugars
- Updated list of minerals
%DV?
Known as “shortfall nutrients,” which are nutrients Canadians don’t get enough of
%5DV?
This would mean you’re not consuming enough of these specific nutrients daily
Is a %5DV bad?
Not always because some things you consume like fat, you want to keep relatively low.
15%DV
This would be too much consumption of this nutrient shortfall regularly.
What was unique about the old ingredients list?
They would put the same ingredient multiple times but in different names.
Also they would rank it based on what ingredient makes up most of the food
What did the new ingredients list do?
Instead of writing the same ingredient multiple times they stuck to writing it as one and putting aliases in brackets.
- Also white background and black border with bullet points separating ingredients.
What are nutrition claims?
Statements about levels of nutrients within a food and how the food relates to health.
What is a nutrient content claim?
Describes the amount of a nutrient within a serving of a food. (i.e. high source of; low in sodium, fat free)
What is a health claim?
Potential positive health effects of a food if consumed for health diet
