Athlete Assessment In Sport & Applied Exercise Physiology - Lecture 15 Flashcards
What does Health Related Fitness mean?
Functions and activities of daily living
What contributes to Performance Related Fitness
Sport, Occupational and very specific to task and sport.
What are characteristics of a good assessment of fitness?
- Valid
- Reliable (Inter & Intra)
- Sport Specific
- Practical
- Repeated Regularly
- Interpreted properly
Practical, Completed in Controlled Setting, repeated as regular pre-determined intervals, interpreted properly
More Good Characteristics of a Fitness Assessment
Roles of a Fitness Appraisal Specialist
1) We are not the coach who gets to make decisions about who plays or who doesn’t
2) Convince the coach and the players of the value of fitness assessment
Why assess physical fitness?
1) Work Rate
2) Concentration
3) Technical Performance
4) Tactical Judgement
5) Susceptible to Injury
How can fitness assessment results be used effectively?
1) Establish norms to aid in athlete selection
2) Provide baseline data
3) Monitor effectiveness of a training program
4) Motivate athlete for training and competition
How do we find fitness components of a sport and develop a strategy to evaluate them? (Role of a Fitness Appraisal Specialist)
Utilize/Integrate the knowledge of the coach
Scientific analysis
Tools to determine how hard a sport may be?
Technology
Examples of what wearable tech in Exercise Science is used for?
Accelerometers/pedometers
HR Monitors
Respiration
Sleep
GPS
eTextiles
What does a Physiological Assessment tell us?
Team Training/match data
Physiological Data Tracking
pre-post injury states
Training program efficacy
What does Lab Test mean?
Assessments done in a lab; in a controlled setting.
What does a Field Test mean?
Done outside of a lab preferably during the sport one plays. Less controlled environment.
Benefits of a Field Test
Able to measure more people in a bigger setting.
More accessible cost wise
Direct vs. Indirect
Direct is actually measuring something (VO2Max measured with breathing apparatus).
Indirect is an estimate (i.e. gives us an aerobic fitness value without measuring oxygen consumption value)
Direct Tests
Less accessible, higher cost, but gives us a good measure of an athlete’s performance
How can Virtual Reality be used in the sports setting?
Creates this immersive performance environment that has a lot of positives
Advantages of VR?
Focus is on mental preparation
Visualization
Repetition
No Physical Demands
No Injury Risk
4) Construct appropriate battery of tests
5) Recognize practical limitations to testing
Role as a Fitness Appraisal Specialist
What is a battery of tests?
Group of tests measuring a group of outcomes (i.e. Laboratory Tests, Laboratory-Like Tests, Field Tests)
What practical limitations are there to testing?
Accessibility (Cost, Athletes available, Equipment/Facilities, Support Personnel)
Level of Competition and Frequency of Tests.
Example of Constructing a battery of tests and looking at practical limitations (Soccer)
Sport Characteristics and Skills that match the characteristics that can be tested
Headers (Sport Characteristic)
Jump ability would be a matched testable skill for assessing headers in soccer
Changes in Direction (Sport Characteristic)
Testing for Agility
Sprints in 2-3 seconds
Testing via Linear Sprints
100-200 sprints
Repeated sprint ability
10-12k traveled
Aerobic Fitness (VO2Max test or stamina)
Interpretation and Feedback of Results (Role as a Fitness Appraisal Specialist)
Easy to Understand
Objectively Measured
Evidence-informed Interpretations based on Appropriate Comparative Data
NHL Entry-Draft Combine
Created by York Professors that ran a battery of tests for elite athletes. The core of it was measuring how fit these people are and the fitness tests need to reflect the demands of the sport.
