Memory- Sperling Sensory Capacityn Duration Limited Flashcards
Memory evidence to suggest sensory memory store is limited
Sensory register is
Memory store gor each 5 senses
Memory evidence to suggest sensory memory store is limited
2 main parts of mem store
Iconic store-visual info
Echoic store-auditory info-hear
Memory evidence to suggest sensory memory store is limited
Other main parts of sensory reg
Haptic store -feel
Gustatory store-taste
Olfactory-smell
Memory evidence to suggest sensory memory store is limited
Trace decay
When u pay attention info goes to STM
If u dont it fades away this is trace decay

Capacity and duration in sensory reg
Method n aim
Sperling 1960
Aim-capacity and duration of sensory reg
Method-flashed 3×4grid letters onto screen for 50 millisecs
He asked em to recall
Then asked to recall single rows of letters when particular tones were heard
High for top row
Medium gor middle row etc.
Memory evidence to suggest sensory memory store is limited
Capacity n duration in sensoey reg
Results
Participants coreectly recalled 4 letters
Participants asked to recall the single rows of letterd n recalled on average 3 items .however jtems decayed rapidly.
Memory evidence to suggest sensory memory store is limited
Capacity n duration in sensory reg
Conclusion
Capacity of sensory=minimum 4 items and duration between 250 n 500 millisecs
Thought that image of each item fades during 50 ms and time it takes to reprot back recalled items so therefore it could be much larger than 4 items.
Memory evidence to suggest sensory memory store is limited
High control
All participants had same experience
-all shown letterd for same amount of time
Lack confounding n EV
Memory evidence to suggest sensory memory store is limited
Low ecologjcal validity
Participants shown random letters in lab n asked to recall them -probs not like info shown irl situations
