Q

Atttachmen
Animal study
Lorenz method

A

Feild exp
Took large clutch of eggs
Divided randomly
Half with biological mother
Half with lorenz present
Lorez imitated behaviour of all hatched eggs
With quacking sound
,put all goslings together before hatched under an upturned box to ensure Imprinting occured

Lorenz
Findings

A

When box removed
2 groups separated to go to respective mothers
Half to goose half to lorenz
-imprinted
Followed first moving object
During 12-17 hour critical period after hatching

Animal studies
High control
Harlow

A

Harlow had more or less full control of environment
Confident IV -cloth/wire mum
Causes DV-time with each mother fig

However, nothing just materials diff in IV but mothers faces r too ,inters confounding variable

Q

Attachment
Animal studs
Practical application harlow

A

Better understand importance of early attachment for later life
Cus long term risks from neglect
(Unskilled at mating, fight, flight or freeze when socialising ,increase aggression)
Social workers now better placed cus know that there’s detrimental impact for infants to be separated from mums -infants benefit

Ethics harlow n lorenz

A

Physical harm,some killed-monkeis

gueese that imprinted on harlow denied opportunity to gain skills would of got from bio mum

Not replicable today

But important data so it’s just?

Q

Trouble extrapolating

A

Humans may not behave same as monkies n gueese(diff DNA, humans can’t walk till a year old
Humans gain primary attachment after 7 months but gueese imprint at first moving stimuli seen,r diff species)
Diff complexities,intelligence communications
Instinctive
