Atatchment-effects Of Instututionalisation Flashcards
Atatchment
Institionalisation effects
Disinhibited atatchment
Child is equally friendly n affectionate towards people they know well or who are strangers .may be an adaption to multiple caregivers
Atatchment
Institionalisation effects
Intellectuall delay
Far behind from peers
Effects is less pronounced if children adopted before age 6 months

Rutters study
165 Romanian orphans adopted in Britain were longitudinally assed for physical emotional development at ages 4 6 11 15
52 British children adopted around same time were CG
Atatchment
Institionalisation effects
Rutter findings
Half of orphans showed intellectually delay when came
at age 11recovery rates related to age of adoption
Before 6 months mean IQ of 102
Between 6 months n 2 years IQ of 86
After 6 months IQ 77
Disinhibited related to to age of adoption
Apparent in children adopted after 6 months
Rare for before

Institionalisation effects
Zeanah study method
Used strange situation to assess atatcgment in 95 children aged 12 to 13 months who spend most lives in institutions
Compared to CG of 50 children who’d never experienced institutional care
Atatchment
Institionalisation effects
Zeanah findings
65% institutional group were classified with diagnosed atatchment
44% instutioon classed as disinhibited atatchment as compared to CG with only 20% controls

Practical application zeanah n rutter
Significant improvement in how kids looked after in institutions
Now only 1 or 2 key workers assigned to look after each child n adoption process has been shortened to months not yrs
Last orphanage in Romania closed down
Atatchment
Institionalisation effects
Fewer evs that other research
Previous studs Involved children who had experienced significant bereavement abuse or neglect
Before they were institutionalised .difficult to isolate effects of institutions from prior experience. In both studs Romanian studs were taken into their institution too early to have experienced extensive trauma
Atatchment
Institionalisation effects
Relability
Same exact results found with morison n elwood on Romanian orphans with Canadian parents shows external reliability n even more evidence that adoption process should be shorter
Atatchment
Institionalisation effects
Long term effects not clear
Too soon to say wether children suffered long term or short term effects cus adopted orphans only followed to their mid teens
Children who currently lag in intellectual development or display atatchment may catch up as adults
