Medicare: Passed in 1965
-Federally funded program which provided federal aid to elderly citizens for medical expenses
-The program shifted financial responsibility from the patient to the government, although the citizens of the country paid for the program though taxes
Medicaid: Passed in 1966
-An extension of Medicare which made feral aid available to welfare recipients and citizens of all ages
-What was the significance of this program. Read about Michael Carrington’s Other America.
Civil Rights Act of 1964 and 1968

-Proposed by Kennedy in 1963 and was passed in the House of Rep. but was stopped in the Senate
-After Kennedy assassination, support arose and gathered the two-thirds majority to pass in the Senate

Voting Rights Act of 1965

- Gave federal protection to African-Americans attempting to exercise their right to vote
- Violence in Selma, Alabama helped create support for the passage of the Voting Rights Act
War on Poverty

- A series of acts and programs passed by the LBJ administration which aided U.S. citizens in areas such as housing, health-care,education, and employment
- The Office of Economic Opportunity was the “centerpiece” of the War on Poverty, but was controversial due to its use of Community Action, which called the involvement of members of poor communities to help in the planning and administration of the programs
