Social Mobility

Nativism

1) Mid 19’th century
2) A genre of literature written and read by middle class woman
3) It was created by Nathaniel Hawthorne as an alternative to the common “trash” (literature) the public was reading.
4) The set of novels were extremely popular and caught the eye of many woman because of its references to things like marriage, hope and beauty.
Supreme Order of the Star Spangled Banner/ Know Nothings

1) In 1850 many nativist groups came together to form the Supreme Order of the Star Spangled Banner.
2) It consisted of a list which included banning Catholics of foreign-born from holding public office, literacy tests for voting, and more restrictive naturalization laws.
3) This code adopted a strict code of secrecy that included a password and led to this group being called the “Know Nothings”.
4) The Know Nothings became involved with political parties after the election of 1852, and created anew political organization known as the American Party.
5) This new organization obtained much support from the East in the election of 1854, primarily from Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts. It received more moderate support from other regions.
6) After 1854 the party became unpopular, but its most important impact was contributing to the collapse of the existing party system.

2) Opened the American Museum in New York in 1842, which contained freak shows of midgets and magic
3) Used lectures to lure in crowds and served as example of the extreme popularity of lecturers in the 19th century
