Trent Affair
Began in 1861, confederate diplomats-James M.Mason,and John Slidell- slipped through inneffective union blockadeto Havana Cuba, where they boarded a English Streamer( the Trent), for england. waiting in the frigid waters of cuba, the American Frigate, San Juanito, commanded by Charles Wilkes. without authorization he stopped the british vessel, arrested the diplomats carried them in triumph into boston only to learn that the British government demanded the releasment of the diplomats and a apology. due to hot public sentiment, both lincoln and seward aware that wilkes had violated a maritime law waied till things cooled off so they could freee the diplomats and issue an apology. Homestead Act
the homested act of 1862 permitted any citizen or prospective citizen to claim 160 areas of public land and to purchase it for a small fee after living on it for 5 years. ( Brinkly pg. 378)
Shiloh
April 1862, A big win for the union forces in which Ulysses S. Grant with apporximately 40,000 men were advancing south ( nearby Shiloh Tennessee) only to be met with confederate forces equalling its own commanded by Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard. the result being the battle of Shiloh April 6-7. Johnston died but union forces were forced to retreat but luckily reinforced with 25,00 ment they were able to regain lost ground and force Beauregard to withdraw. (Brinkly pg 394)
Antietam
September 1862,due to the luck of attaining a copy of lee’s orders, McClellan had a step forward on everything and instead of attacking quickly to eliminate lee’s forces, he waited till they got together at Antietam creek were on September 17 ( the bloodiest single-day engagement) McClellan 87,000 man attacked lees 50,000 with enormous casualties at both sides. instead of defeating lee’s forces he let them escape, after that he was dismissed by Lincoln.
Crittenden Compromise Failure

1861 Compromise between the North and the South written by Senator John Crittenden of Kentucky that called for amendments to the Constitution to ensure the permanent existance of slavery in slave states, and ensure slavery in D.C. It also proposed reinstating the Missouri Compromise Line.
No Republicans were willing to accept this Compromise and it failed

South Carolina left the Union in 1860
Mississippi left in 1862 along with Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.
Lincoln stated that the states had no right to leave the Union and that leaving the Union was an act of treason
Fort Sumter

1861 Union fort on an island outside of South Carolina that the Confederacy demanded surrender to. People of Fort Sumter Refused and the Confederacy began bombing the fort for two days until Anderson surrendered.

Union troops almost beat Confederates but the Confederates rallied causing the Union troops to break formation and retreat. Confederates were too disorganized to pursue the retreating forces and missed an opportunity.
Killed Union moral
Made Lincoln realize the war wouldnt be an easy win like he hypothesized.
