Lecture 22: Anatomy and Physiology IV (digestive finish up) Flashcards
What is the alimentary canal?
The digestive tract from mouth to anus
What is the order in which food is processed?
- mouth
- esophagus
- stomach(to breakdown food)
- small intestine(chemical digestion to break down food to nutrient molecules)
- large intestine(stool formation)
- rectum (holding area for stool)
- anus
What are some accessory organs?
- salivary glands
- liver
- gall bladder
- pancreas
What are salivary glands?
The glands that secrete enzymes into the mouth
What is the liver?
Produces bile salts
What is the gall bladder?
Stores bile salts and releases them into the small intestines
What are the pancreas?
Produced enzymes for digestion and releases into small intestines
What is digestion?
The breakdown of food into nutrients
What is the upper digestive tract?
- mouth
- esophagus
- stomach
What is the first process of the digestive system?
- takes place in mouth
- mastication takes place using teeth to mechanically process food.
- salivary glands release saliva and amylase enzyme breaks down carbohydrates
- lubrication occurs
- nolus or mass of food/saliva is rolled into a ball by the tongue
- peristalsis occurs in a wave of motion by muscular contraction to push the food through GI tract
- mucous cells secrete mucus to protect stomach wall
- parietal cells secrete hydrochloric acid
- chief cells secrete pepsin that breaks down food protein
- chyme occurs of acidic soup of partially digested food
Small intestine process in digestive system?
- duodenum, jejunum, ileum
- chyme combines with digestive secretions from accessory organs
Small intestine process in digestive system, explain?
- pancreas releases pancreatic juice
- pH has to be greater than 7 to neutralize acid
- enzymes digest food using lipase to breakdown lipids and amylase to breakdown carbs. also trypsin to break down protein
- Liver secretes bile salts that are released from gall bladder. It emulsifies fats and break up large globules into smaller globulles
- basically absorb nutrients
Large intestine process in digestive system?
