Labor and Delivery Flashcards
preterm labor
labor before 37wks gestation
leading cause of infant death - 75%
induced labor
22% labors induced
when:
beyond term - 42wks
when early delivery reduces morbidity and mortality to infant/mother
labor and delivery meds
oxytocin
methylergonovine
terbutaline
magnesium sulfate
oxytocin
increases strength, frequency, and length of contractions use pump and monitor closely STOP if: resting uterine pressure>15-20mmHg contraction duration>1min contraction freq>2-3min pronounced alteration of FHR or rhythm
methylergonovine
controls postpartum bleeding and causes POWERFUL contractions - oxytocin tried 1st
high risk of HTN
terbutaline
suppresses preterm labor by activating beta2 uterine receptors to relax uterus
tachycardia, hypoTN, pulm edema, hyperglycemia
magnesium sulfate
used for preeclampsia (prevent seizures)
NTI
toxicity: RR<12, loss of DTR, hypoTN, decreased urinary output
antidote: calcium gluconate
preeclampsia sx
HTN, fluid retention, proteinuria
may cause seizures
