inhibit function of proton pumps at gastric mucosal lining
proton pump inhibitor meds
-prazoles omeprazole esomeprazole pantoprazole lansoprazole
common uses of proton pump inhibitors
peptic ulcer dz
GERD
heartburn
issues w/proton pump inhibitors
slow onset, short half-life
don’t crush/chew; take before breakfast
rebound sx: reflux, heartburn, gas
may cause: pneumonia, osteoporosis, hypomagnesemia
H2 blocker meds
ranitidine
cimetidine
famotidine
H2 blocker mechanism of action
block histamine in stomach to mildly aid problem (not as strong as proton pump inhibitors which block BOTH pumps)
issues w/ H2 blockers
diminished effect over time
robound sx if abruptly stopped
confusion w/poor renal function
sucralfate
coats stomach up to 6h
take before meals and 2h b/w other meds d/t absorption interference
