HSV and influenza Flashcards
herpes simplex virus
vesicular lesions lies dormant in nerves mouth, face, eyes, CNS --> HSV 1 genitalila --> HSV 2 can be spread to baby via eyes
no cure
HSV meds
HSV 1 and 2/herpes zoster:
acyclovir
valacyclovir - prodrug w/increased absorption
must drink H2O; taken at onset of sx
issues w/HSV antivirals
HA, N/V, phlebitis (common)
crystal urea, altered mental status (rare)
HSV meds mechnism of action
activated by viral enzyme
spares healthy human cells
influenza vaccines
protection begins in 1-2wks
protection lasts 6mo (4 for elderly)
do NOT cause the flu
flu med
oseltamivir
mechanism of influenza
viral particles infect cell and an enzyme allows for release of viral particles into another cell
oseltamivir mechanism of action
block neuraminidase enzyme from releasing viral particles into new cells
most effective EARLY on when viral particles not released
issues w/oseltamivir
well-tolerated
N/V
take w/in 48h to decrease duration of sx
effective prophylactically, but not a substitute for vaccine
