Bladder Flashcards
system which controls bladder
parasympathetic nervous system via acetylcholine at M3 (muscarinic) receptors in the bladder
overactive bladder
common, 33% US
mainly affects elderly
unpredictable, embarrassing
sx of overactive bladder syndrome
urgency
frequency - 8+ times/daily
nocturia - 2+ times/night
urge incontinence - didn’t make it
tx for overactive bladder syndrome
behavioral therapy: planning voiding times, planning drinking times, limit caffeine, kegel exercises
meds - oxybutynin
oxybutynin
overactive bladder - blocks acetylcholine at M3 receptors
anticholinergic
tachycardia
contraindicated in pts w/glaucoma and myasthenia gravis
glaucoma and oxybutynin
med increases intraocular pressure
myasthenia gravis and oxybutynin
autoimmune destruction of acetylcholine receptors w/myasthenia gravis…blockage of receptors from med worsens sx
