Dyslipidemia Flashcards
types of cholesterol
- very low-density lipoprotein (worst)
- low-density lipoprotein
- high-density lipoprotein; 50/50 protein and fat
dyslipidemia meds
-statins cholesterol absorption inhibitors bile-acid sequestrants nicotinic acid "niacin" fibrates
-statins mechanism of action
halt formation of LDL and VLDL cholesterol via inhibition of an enzyme; causes slight increase in HDL
statins to know
atorvastatin
lovastatin
rosuvastatin
simvastatin
issues w/-statins
hepatotoxicity
myopathy (muscle problems)
rhapdomyolysis
avoid grapefruit
rhapdomyolysis
myoglobin clogs kidneys to produce kidney failure
cola colored urine
check CK levels
nicotinic acid “niacin”
vitamin B3 (meat)
increases HDL, decreases LDL
causes intense flushing of the face, GI issues
may take aspirin 30min prior to admin
cholesterol absorption inhibitor
inhibits absorption of cholesterol from food during digestion
side effects: hepatitis, myopathy
bile acid sequestrants
decrease LDL
many drug interactions
fibrates
lowers VLDL, increases HDL
side effects: GI issues, gallstones, myopathy, hepatotoxicity
