L33. Endodontic Diseases Flashcards
What is endodontics the study of?
Diseases and injuries of the dental pulp
What type of tissue is dental pulp?
Unmineralised soft connective tissue
What is apical/periapical periodontitis?
Acute or chronic inflammation around the tooth root
What does reversible pulpitis mean?
The pulp is alive
What does irreversible pulpitis mean?
The pulp is dead
What 2 stages can inflamed pulp result in?
Infected pulp then abscess
*What is the most common endodontic disease?
Apical periodontitis
Name and describe the 2 types of abscesses.
- Acute abscess - happens quickly and accumulates pus.
2. Chronic apical abscess - happens slowly and pus sometimes drains to a fistula or sinus tract
Give the definition of a dental abscess.
Localised pus collection inside teeth or gums from a bacterial infection
How do radicular cysts arise?
From epithelial residues (cell rests of Malassez) in the periodontal ligament from inflammation, usually after pulp death.
What does laterogenic mean?
Adverse effects from medicinal drugs
What other factors apart from bacteria can causes abscesses?
Trauma
Periodontal disease
Give 2 examples of treatment for endodontic disease.
Root canal treatment
extraction
In rare cases, what other kind of infection can be caused by abscesses?
Intracranial infections
Name 2 other conditions which can be mistaken for an abscess.
Sinusitis TMJD (TMJ Dysfunction)
