L6. Defence Cells Flashcards
Which cells do macrophages arise from?
Monocytes
What do mast cells do?
Protect against pathogens and play a role in allergy.
What are neutrophils?
Phagocytic granulocytes where “nets” trap harmful substances.
Describe the role and appearance of Eosinophils and basophils.
They defend against parasites. They are larger than neutrophils and also have granules.
What are dendritic cells? What do they do?
Dendritic cells are antigen presenting cells. They activate T and B cells.
Give an example of a dendritic cell.
Langerhans cells
Give the 5 examples of cells from myeloid origin.
- Mast cells
- Macrophages
- Neutrophils
- Eosinophils
- Basophils
What type of immunity are cells of myeloid origin from?
Acquired immunity
What do natural killer cells do?
recognise and kill abnormal cells
Which type of immunity are natural killer cells from?
Innate immunity
Give an example of natural killer cells
Lymphoid cells
Which immunity type are B cells and T cells from?
Adaptive immunity
Where do T cells come from and where do they develop?
T cells come from bone marrow and develop in the thymus.
How do T cells respond to pathogens?
Through T cell receptors to create cellular immunity.
Describe the role of B cells.
B cells have antigen receptors and produce antibodies.
