L13. Gingival and Periodontal Disease Flashcards
Give the 4 components which make up the “periodontum”.
- Gingiva
- Periodontal ligament
- Root cementum
- Alveolar bone
Which substance can cause abnormal pigmentation of the gingiva without disease?
Melanin
What are the boundaries of the amelo-cemental junction?
Where the enamel stops and the cementum on the root begins.
What happens in the “free gingiva”?
This is where bacteria can accumulate, causing pockets.
What is the gap between the enamel and gingiva called?
Sulcus
What does periodontal disease describe?
A group of diseases including gingivitis and periodontitis.
Give the 4 signs of inflammation.
- Pain
- Heat
- Swelling
- Redness
Give 4 symptoms of periodontal disease
- Bleeding
- Mobility
- Halitosis
- Recession
What factors can influence periodontal disease?
- General health
- Infections
- Immune function
- Genetics
Name a type of biofilm.
Dental plaque.
Is plaque unimicrobial or polymicrobial?
Plaque is polymicrobial.
Where is plaque found?
Subgingival and supragingival levels.
Describe in 2 stages how the biofilm forms.
- A pellicle of cells is formed which then adhere to the tooth surface.
- The cells then grow to produce the mature biofilm.
What is dental plaque in relation to calculus?
Dental plaque is calcified to form calculus.
How do “false pockets” arise?
From gingival swelling
