**Higher Only** Flashcards
What hormone causes the maturation of an egg in the ovary?
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) causes the maturation of an egg in the ovary, within a structure called a follicle. Produced in the pituitary gland.
What does FSH stimulate in the ovaries?
FSH stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogen.
Oestrogen causes the lining of the uterus to grow again.
What is the role of oestrogen in the menstrual cycle?
Oestrogen causes the lining of the uterus to grow again and stimulates the production of LH while inhibiting the secretion of more FSH. Produced in the ovaries and secreted as a result of FSH.
What hormone is produced as a result of oestrogen?
Luteinising hormone (LH) is produced as a result of the hormone oestrogen.
Its release results in ovulation.
What is the function of progesterone?
Progesterone maintains the lining of the uterus and supports a pregnancy if the egg is fertilised.
Produced in the ovaries and secreted from the egg follicle.
What hormones does progesterone inhibit?
Progesterone inhibits the release of both FSH and LH.
