9.4 - Parasitism and Mutualism Flashcards
What is a symbiotic relationship?
Some species live together in a symbiotic relationship.
What are the two types of symbiotic relationships?
The two types are parasitism and mutualistic relationship.
What is parasitism?
Parasitism occurs when a smaller species lives directly within or on a larger species and benefits at the expense of the other species.
What is a mutualistic relationship?
A mutualistic relationship occurs when one species provides some benefit or resource to the other species.
What is an example of a parasite?
The tapeworm is a parasite that lives inside the gut of humans and steals nutrients from the host.
What is commensalism?
Commensalism is when there is no damage caused to either species, and there is often a mutual benefit.
What is an example of commensalism?
Algae and fungi form lichens, where algae provides sugars for fungi and fungi allows algae to live in extreme conditions.
