8.11 - Core Practical: Investigate the Rate of Respiration in Living Organisms Flashcards
What is a respirometer?
A machine to measure the effect of temperature on the oxygen consumption of small organisms.
What is the first step in building a respirometer?
Pick a small organism that you would like to measure the rate of respiration of (e.g. maggots, or leaves).
What should you place in the test tube?
5cm3 of soda lime.
What is placed on top of the soda lime in the test tube?
Gauze and a small amount of the organism being tested.
What equipment is attached to the test tube?
A three-way tap, capillary tube, and syringe.
What should be used to plug the test tube?
A stopper.
What is inserted into the capillary tube?
A small amount of coloured liquid.
What should you do after inserting the coloured liquid?
Turn the 3-way tap to allow air to enter the test tube for 5 minutes.
What should you do after 5 minutes?
Close the 3-way tap.
What should you record after closing the tap?
How far the coloured liquid has moved against a scale.
