1.15 - Transport in and Out of Cells Flashcards
What substances need to be transported in and out of cells?
Substances like oxygen, glucose, and waste products need to be transported in and out of cells constantly to support life processes.
What are the three ways substances are transported in and out of cells?
The three ways are diffusion, osmosis, and active transport.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is a form of passive transport that does not require energy. Molecules move from an area of high concentration to one of low concentration.
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is a form of passive transport that applies only to water. Movement occurs from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution across a selectively permeable membrane.
How can osmosis be understood in terms of solute concentration?
Movement of water occurs from an area of high solute concentration to lower solute concentration.
What is active transport?
Active transport is a form of transport that requires energy, which comes from ATP produced in respiration. It moves molecules against a concentration gradient.
What does it mean to move against a concentration gradient?
It means moving molecules from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration.
