6.11B **Biology Only** - Adaptations of the Leaf Flashcards
What is the function of stomata in leaves?
Stomata can close to minimize water loss and open to increase evaporation and transpiration. They also allow gas exchange when open.
What is chlorophyll and why is it important?
Chlorophyll is green and is the most efficient color for absorbing light, allowing for maximum light absorption.
Why are leaves thin?
Leaves are very thin, which allows carbon dioxide to travel a short distance to enter the leaf for photosynthesis and oxygen to diffuse out easily.
How does a large surface area benefit leaves?
A large surface area allows the leaf to absorb more light at once, maximizing the rate of photosynthesis.
