8.1 - Transporting Substances Flashcards
Why is it necessary to transport substances into and out of organisms?
It is vital for life to transport essential substances into organisms and to remove waste products to prevent accumulation.
What do plants need to take in during photosynthesis?
Plants need to take in carbon dioxide and dissolved nutrient and mineral molecules, as well as water from the soil and air.
What waste product do plants excrete during photosynthesis?
Plants excrete oxygen as a waste product of photosynthesis.
What advanced system do animals have to remove waste?
Animals have advanced systems such as the kidney to efficiently remove waste.
What does the kidney remove from the body?
The kidney removes waste such as urea and excess ions.
What happens if excess urea is not removed from the body?
If excess urea is not removed, it builds up in the body and becomes toxic.
What can happen if excess carbon dioxide builds up in the blood?
Excess carbon dioxide can dissolve in the blood, causing it to become acidic, leading to a condition called acidosis.
