4.7 - Five Kingdoms vs. Three Domains Flashcards
Why is it important to classify organisms?
To understand the genetic relationships between species and organisms.
What are the two main classification systems for organisms?
The Five Kingdoms system and the Three Domains system.
What are the Five Kingdoms?
Animals, Plants, Fungi, Prokaryotes, and Protists.
What is the binomial naming system based on?
The genus and species of an organism.
What is an example of a species and its classification?
Human (Homo sapiens) belongs to the Animal kingdom, phylum Chordata, class Mammalia, and order Primate.
What are the three domains in the Three Domains system?
Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukaryota.
What characterizes the domain Archaea?
Primitive bacteria that live in extreme environments, such as hot springs.
What characterizes the domain Bacteria?
True bacteria that have similar features to archaea.
What characterizes the domain Eukaryota?
Organisms with a nucleus enclosed in membranes, including protists, fungi, plants, and animals.
