heme labs Flashcards
Hemophilia B: PT/PTT
Hemophilia is caused by congenital deficiencies of factor VIII or factor IX. Hemophilia typically presents as bleeding into joints, easy bruising, or bleeding after simple procedures. However, it does not typically present in the newborn period and is associated with only an increased PTT.
Impaired Von-Willebrand factor (vWF) function: PT/PTT
Impaired Von-Willebrand factor (vWF) function describes the most common bleeding disorder. Though vWF deficiency could present as prolonged bleeding, the PT would be normal. The PTT is also normal in the majority of cases of this disease.
DIC: PT/PTT,
Disseminated intravascular coagulation causes bleeding from consumption of coagulation factors. This is most frequently seen in shock or severe trauma. Many small clots (microthrombi) form throughout the body and result in consumption of all the clotting factors, which leads to bleeding. May present as an elevated PT/PTT,
vitamin K deficiency: PT/PTT
