goal setting: SMART targets Flashcards
describe SMART targets
S- specific = specific to demands of sport/ muscle used/ movements involved
M - measurable = must be possible to measure whether they have been met
A - accepted = must be accepted/ aggreed upon by performer and coach
R - realistic = it must actually be possible to complete the goal
T - time phased = it must be set over a fixed period of time
advantage and disadvantage of specificity aspect of SMART targets
+ individuals within the team will knwo their goal and have specific requirements/ gials to aim for
- the smart target can lead to too much focus being placed on reaching the goal
advantage and disadvantage of measurable aspect of SMART targets
+ it is good to monitor progress as it can be measured
- it can limit creativity if there is too much measuring
advantage and disadvantage of agreed aspect of SMART targets
+ the performer feels like they have ownership of the target, as it is something they have agreed to do
- it relies on suitable levels of intrinsic motivation
advantage of realistic aspect of SMART targets
+ individual has a high chance of seeing improvement and therefore may become more motivated
advantage and disadvantage of time phased aspect of SMART targets
+ set time allows the performer to see the improvement, and prepare punctually for an event/ season
- may be increased pressure to meet the dealine
