- may improve fitenss, resulting in physical health and well-being being improved
- if goal is based on imprpvement in fitness, perforer will be able to meet training demands with more ease and can use principle of overload to push thier body harder

- may feel more focused and icnrease effort, so feels more motivated and concentrated.
- if performer knows their goal and the effort required to meet thier goal, they know what to to and can come to terms with the demands of meeting the goal

- provides focus to training
- helps develop strategies for training
- performer can aim for ‘peak’ performance at event
- performer will try hard with al aspects of training
- performer knows what they want to achieve
- coach also knows goal and can provide appropriate support
