aerobic and anaerobic exercise Flashcards
1
Q
define aerobic exercise
A
exercise in the presence of oxygen
2
Q
define anaerobic exercise
A
exercise without enough oxygen
3
Q
describe immediate energy demands
A
- needed for 0-12 seconds
- ATP stores in the body are used
- ATP only lasts 3 seconds before it needs to be resynthesised
- creatine phosphate is broken down to re-make ATP for up to 10 seconds
- used for activities like javelin or 100m sprint
4
Q
describe lactic acid energy system
A
- during 10 seconds and 3 minutes of exercise if body still needs energy it uses lactic acid energy system
- this breaks down glycogen into glucose and pyruvic acid
- without oxygen this is converted into lactic acid
5
Q
describe aerobic enegry system
A
3 plus minutes of exercise
- body works at a lower intensity so there is enough oxygen for energy system to be aerobic
6
Q
define anaerobic threshold
A
the point during exercise at which lactic acid starts to significanlty increase
7
Q
define oxygen debt
A
the additional debt that bust be takin into the body to restore all systems to their normal states
8
Q
define oxygen defecit
A
when there is insufficient oxygen
