Why is vomiting important?
its a protective mechanism designed to remove irritating substances from the GI tract
What can vomiting be the direct result of?
many different diseases
What are the 5 types of stimuli that can trigger emesis?
- direct stimulation of the vomiting center
- stimulation of the CRTZ (dopamine receptors)
- irritation of tissues innervated by vagus nerve (GI tract, viscera)
- stimulation of vestibular nerve (motion sickness)
- stimulation of cerebral cortex
How long after an animal ingests a toxin (liquid) can you induce vomiting?
within 2 hours
How long after an animal ingests a solid toxin can you still induce vomiting to get rid of some of it?
within 4 hours
When should you NOT induce vomiting? (4)
- caustic substances
- gasoline or other petroleum products
- animal is unconscious or extremely depressed
- animal is not able to vomit (rabbits, horses)
What are the 2 types of drugs available to induce vomiting?
- centrally acting emetics
2. locally acting emetics
What are centrally acting emetics?
stimulate dopamine or alpha-2 receptors in the CNS
What are locally acting emetics?
cause irritation of the GI tract
