Antiemetics Flashcards
Examples of Phenothiazine Tranquilizers (3)
- acepromazine
- chlorpromazine
- prochlorperazine
General Characteristics of Phenothiazine Tranquilizers (2)
- block dopamine receptors in the CNS
2. do not prevent vomiting caused by GI irritation
Examples of Antihistamines (2)
- diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
2. dimenhydrinate (Dramamine)
General Characteristics of Antihistamines (3)
- inhibit transmission of nerve impulses from vestibular nerve by blocking histamine receptors
- can produce a sedative effect
- affects allergy testing
Examples of Anticholinergics (3)
- aminopentamide (Centrine)
- isopropamide (Darbazine)
- Atropine
General Characteristics of Anticholinergics (2)
- blocks nerve conduction through vagus nerve when there’s GI irritation (acetylcholine receptors)
- may decrease GI secretions and GI motility
Examples of Serotonin Receptor Antagonists (2)
- ondansetron (Zofran)
2. dolasetron (Anzemet)
General Characteristics of Serotonin Receptor Antagonists (3)
- block nerve transmission through vagus nerve and prevent stimulation of CRTZ
- seldom used in animals
- Human drug mostly
Example of Metoclopramide
Reglan
General Characteristics of Metoclopramide (3)
- blocks dopamine receptors in the CNS (CRTZ)
- also acts locally in GI tract
- may cause sedation in dogs and excitement in cats
How does Metoclopramide act locally in the GI? (3)
- increases lower esophageal muscle tone
- causing relaxation of the pylorus
- increasing GI motility
What does Maropitant do? (3)
- prevents vomiting centrally and locally
- blocks neurokinin-1 receptors found in GI tract, CRTZ, vestibular nerve, and vomiting center
- stops all vomiting causes
What is Maropitant labeled for use for?
used in dogs to prevent vomiting and motion sickness
What effects does Maropitant cause? (3)
- cough suppressant
- analgesia properties (GI pain)
- stings when given SQ
What can be done with Maropitant when giving it IV? (2)
- refrigerate drug
2. give slow
