Definition of Diarrhea
abnormally frequent discharge of fecal matter of increased volume and fluid content
What are the causes of diarrhea? (4)
- Maldigestion or malabsorption of food
- Hypersecretion of intestinal fluid
- Increased permeability of intestinal mucosal blood vessels
- Increased intestinal motility
What can cause Maldigestion or malabsorption of food?
sudden changes of food
What is increased permeability of intestinal mucosal blood vessels caused by? (4)
- Inflammation of small intestine wall

- Toxins
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
What are antidiarrheals used to treat?
treat the symptom but not the primary cause of the diarrhea
How do antidiarrheals modify intestinal motility?
slow movement of bowel contents
What are the antidiarrheal drugs that modify gastric motility? (2)
- opioid analgesics
2. anticholinergic dugs
Why are antidiarrheal drugs that modify gastric motility not frequently used in animals?
a large portion of diarrheas in small animals involve decreased motility
Antidiarrheals that act as adsorbents and/or protectants include? (3)
- activated charcoal
- kaolin and pectin
- bismuth subsalicylate
